Humanities Major
Art, music, literature, language, and history are all deeply interconnected—through the Humanities major, you can study them all. The major combines courses from the departments of art and art history, communication and media studies, English, history, music, philosophy and religion, theatre and dance, and world languages and cultures into one interdisciplinary major. The major is particularly well-suited for students who are self-motivated and passionate with broad interests.
Humanities is the study of human culture, what people create, and how they process and document the human experience. By combining different approaches to one topic, you not only learn additional context about how or why a work was created, you also learn different lenses through which you can approach those topics from experts in the various fields. The major will teach you to be an effective writer and communicator and someone who thinks through multiple lenses with expanded critical thinking skills. Coursework is flexible, making it possible to double major or study abroad.
Take advantage of the opportunities offered by each department while mapping your own path or topic of interest to study. By the time you graduate with a humanities major, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and approaches of at least two different disciplines contributing to the program.
- Identify important questions within the interdisciplinary area of humanities and answer them, employing methods of your chosen disciplines and cross-disciplinary thinking.
- Employ a variety of analytic and interpretive skills to evaluate texts through critical analysis.
- Use skills of clear and structured oral and written communication to express your perspective and support it with scholarly evidence.
Your time as a humanities major will culminate in a Senior Capstone Experience (SCE), which will take the form of a written thesis that combines two disciplines. Put your interpretive abilities, writing skills, and understanding of cultural traditions to the test as you explore a topic that interests you.
At Commencement, the Humanities faculty confer the Norman James Humanities Award for Excellence, given by the James family to the senior majoring in humanities who has shown academic distinction and represents the ideals of humanistic society.

They knew a lot about their specific space, but they also were very interested in other disciplines—which made them better in their space. They had a true liberal arts mindset.”
