Department of English
The ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ Department of English is deeply invested in the power of words.
We read, analyze, discuss, and write critically and creatively. Our faculty are experts
in the field, offering a range of courses on topics from medieval literature to postmodernism,
narrative journalism to poetry, Chaucer to women writers, book history to modern publishing
practices, and more through special topics offerings. Literary history, critical reading,
information literacy, and rhetorical knowledge are at the core of our department.
The department regularly brings well-known writers, editors, and scholars to campus
and into the classroom thanks to an endowment from Sophie Kerr, a successful writer in the early 20th century from the Eastern Shore. The endowment
also supports the nation's largest undergraduate literary prize, The Sophie Kerr Prize, awarded each year to the graduating senior demonstrating the best potential for
future achievement in a literary endeavor. Sophie Kerr Promise Grants are available to any English major to be used for experimental learning and professional
opportunities. Sophie Kerr funds also provide scholarships.
The department offers both a major and minor in English, as well as minors in creative
writing and journalism, editing & publishing. Our courses also apply to the teacher
certification program, the first-year seminar (FYS) program, the writing program,
and the humanities and fine arts distribution. We help facilitate internships for
our students, be it within the department, on campus, virtually, or out in the world.
ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ has a chapter of the Sigma Tau Delta international English honor society.

English Major
Lovers of literature, aspiring authors, and budding journalists will find a home in the English major at ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½. By the time they graduate, our students understand the breadth, variety, and depth of literature in English across a range of genres, time periods, and topics.

Kiplin Hall Program
Through the ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ Kiplin Hall Program, students explore the landscapes, writers, and history of northern England, with particular focus on how those things intersect.

Sophie Kerr Legacy
Sophie Kerr, a prolific and popular American writer of the early 20th century, has left an indelible literary mark at ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½. The gift she bequeathed more than 50 years ago has enabled the College to bring to campus the nation's top writers, editors and scholars and to support our unique community of student writers with grants, scholarships, and fantastic opportunities to experience the literary life of writing and publishing.
