American Studies Major
If you’re someone who has several different interests surrounding the United States
and American culture, the American Studies major is for you. The major is completely
customizable, allowing you to take courses based on your interests, regardless of
the department offering them. The American Studies major explores U.S. culture and
American national identity from an interdisciplinary perspective, helping students
develop a rich understanding of the American experience. The ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ Starr
Center for the Study of the American Experience provides unique opportunities for
the study of the American landscape, providing internships, field trips, guest speakers,
community collaborations, and more to our students.
Through your chosen coursework, you can explore one topic from multiple perspectives.
Learn about the cultural, historic, and literary canon of the United States, and where
and how those things overlap, directly from experts in those fields. Racial, ethnic,
gender, LGBTQ, or class identities—all central themes in current American Studies—can
be explored more holistically by approaching them from different fields through the
lens of the major. By studying American culture, anything could become curriculum,
from music icons like Madonna, Jay-Z, and Taylor Swift, to classic literature like
Huckleberry Finn, Invisible Man, and The Crucible, exploring not only those sources,
but the cultural happenings surrounding their creation.
Through an American Studies seminar, students understand how the field has evolved
and develop independent research projects, which often mature into Senior Capstone
Experience (SCE) theses. The American Studies SCE can be written on any topic involving
American culture. One of the oldest interdisciplinary majors at ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½,
the American Studies major is flexible, allowing for double majors and self-driven,
independent study.
