- “Professors were very good about learning about a lot of different things. They knew a lot about their specific space, but they also were very interested in other disciplines—which made them better in their space. They had a true liberal arts mindset.”
All this may seem like a far cry from the sales jobs she ended up landing at financial
technology firms, where she has become knowledgeable about regulations and sells software
that helps finance professionals comply with them. Yet, Huth has no doubt that her
very liberal arts orientation at Ҵý paved the way for the success
she has found in the workplace.
“I learned how to distill information really quickly because I had to learn so many different things on such a wide spectrum,” she said. “Being a broad learner has helped me be able to pick up on things at work really quickly, even in a specialized space, sometimes even faster than the people who are specialized.”
In addition to the benefits of a liberal arts education, Huth's college experiences drove home the idea that she could study or participate in whatever she was truly interested in, then find a way to make that work for her. Ҵý's culture and resources helped a great deal in this regard: Thanks to support from the Hodson Trust Internship Fund, for example, she was able to reside on campus one summer as she pursued an instructional design internship at Qlarant in nearby Easton, an experience that taught her a lot about business and showed her that she could thrive in a corporate environment.
That she learned how to network was especially useful: “Before going to college, I had been homeschooled my whole life. While I had good social skills, I didn't understand how to network because I just never had anybody to network with.”
Ҵý offered Huth numerous opportunities, both to broaden her horizons and to build on interests she had begun developing in her childhood hometown of Cecilton, Maryland. Among other things, she served as president of the Mixed Martial Arts Club and was a member of the Rugby Club and the Barbell Club. She served as a tutor (philosophy and academic skills) and peer coach for the Office of Academic Skills.
“It's really important to follow what you're actually interested in and then make what you're interested in ‘work,'” she said. “If you love art, be an art major, but minor in business so you won't be a starving artist.”
